Why facilities specify stainless laboratory casework

Stainless steel can provide a durable, non-porous and readily cleanable surface for laboratory cabinets and work areas. Corrosion and stain performance varies with alloy grade, surface finish, fabrication quality, contaminants, cleaning agents and chemical exposure, so project specifications should document the real operating conditions.

Countertop details that belong in the specification

Document the finished dimensions, stainless alloy, finish, edge profile, backsplash height, seam locations, wall conditions, supports and equipment loads. For wet work areas, identify sink construction, bowl dimensions, drainboards, drain location, work-surface slope and plumbing responsibility. Where cleanability is important, review inside corners, transitions, weld finishing and field joints with the project team.

Stainless surfaces can scratch, show fingerprints and transmit noise, and they are not universally resistant to concentrated acids or every disinfectant. A material review based on exposure concentration, contact time, temperature and cleaning procedure is more reliable than a broad “chemical resistant” claim.
